THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Ai Reali Di Venezia
Wake on the antique wooden floors of a 17th-century Venetian palace, the light off Campo della Fava catching period furniture in a building once known as Cà Corner-Reali, owned first by the Corner family, then by Mr Algarotti and Mr Guzzetti, and finally by Mr Reali, who ran wax factories and a sugar refinery, before it opened as a hotel in 2013 with 37 rooms across three floors, tucked between Rialto and Piazza San Marco, five minutes on foot from the piazza itself. One wing folds into Palazzo Gussoni, a building dating to 1500 and attributed to Pietro Lombardo, so the walls here carry more layered history than most doors in this pocket of the city. The Alle Corone restaurant opens onto a furnished garden, real greenery in a city where courtyards are usually stone, and its kitchen serves authentic Italian cuisine and wine. Upstairs, the Reali Wellness Spa runs a sauna, a Turkish bath and a wide menu of massages, and guests can climb to the altana, the hotel's rooftop terrace, for a view over Venice from above rather than from the water. Rooms range from 14-square-metre Classic quarters to Junior Suites near 40 square metres, furnished in traditional Venetian style with mini-bars and flat-screen televisions, and staff answer in seven languages including Turkish, French and German. This suits travellers who want antique detail and quiet corners over sleek modern design, and couples marking an occasion through the hotel's wedding and event planning. It suits less well families with children under 14, who are barred from the spa itself. The altana, reached only from here, is the reason to pick this address over any equally central rival. A 17th-century palace between Rialto and San Marco, complete with a furnished garden, a rooftop altana and a spa closed to children under 14. It suits travellers after antique detail and quiet corners, not families chasing modern polish.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Ai Reali occupies a fully restored 17th-century Venetian palace once owned by a branch of the Corner family before passing to the Reali family, wax and sugar-refining magnates. One of its wings is Palazzo Gussoni, dating back to 1500 and attributed to the architect Pietro Lombardo, giving the hotel genuine aristocratic Venetian roots.
