Madama garden retreat
Behind an unmarked gate beside the Ponte Chiodo, in the sestiere of Cannaregio, Madama Garden Retreat occupies a wing of Palazzo Antelmi, a noble residence on the Rio di Noale, facing the old facade of the Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia across the water. The building took three years to restore, structural work first, then an engineering system to keep the ground floor dry when the acqua alta rises, before opening in 2019 with nine suites and a private water gate for guests who arrive by boat instead of on foot from the calle. The whole project, from the tidal defences to the choice of door handles, was overseen by Mara De Guidi, a former executive in the fragrance industry who left that career to restore the palazzo by hand and has run it herself ever since. Inside, De Guidi did her own interior design, working in wood, glass, iron and brass, with velvet, silk and brocade drawn from Venetian tradition instead of a showroom's version of it. Four poster beds are set against emerald and jewel toned fabrics, bathrooms are finished in glass and metal instead of the marble default, and the nine suites are furnished individually enough that no two guests compare notes on the same room twice. Breakfast comes to the garden on a trolley each morning, coffee, eggs, pastries and fruit arranged to order instead of laid out as a buffet, with Diptyque courtesy sets and natural cotton linens upstairs, and a small staff, among them Ripon, Filippo and Alberto, who know the city well enough to book a table or a private tour without being asked twice. What it feels like is staying inside someone's private walled garden that happens to have nine bedrooms attached to it, lemon trees and wisteria over a working canal, gondolas passing close enough that guests on the far side of the wall notice them before the guests inside do. There is no restaurant beyond breakfast, no bar to speak of, no lobby, only the gated approach off the calle and the water gate on the Rio di Noale, both built to keep the city on the far side of the wall. It suits travellers doing Venice slowly, past the Rialto and San Marco checklist, on a second or third visit, who would rather borrow De Guidi's decades of local contacts than a concierge desk's version of them. You should not come if you want a restaurant on site, a bar, or the anonymity of a larger hotel where nobody remembers your room number; Madama has nine suites, and by the second morning the staff will know exactly how you take your coffee, which some guests find intrusive instead of comforting. You should come for a garden no other hotel in Cannaregio can offer overnight guests, for a breakfast that takes an hour because nobody is rushing it, and for an owner who restored a noble palazzo by hand and still answers the water gate herself. The short version: A nine-suite restoration of the Palazzo Antelmi in Cannaregio, opened 2019 by former fragrance executive Mara De Guidi, with a private water gate, a walled canalside garden, and breakfast served by trolley, not buffet.
