THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Flora
Breakfast at Hotel Flora is taken in a walled garden that most Venice addresses simply don't have room for, a green courtyard folded into a 17th-century palazzo on one of the city's most elegant streets near St. Mark's Square. The Romanelli family has run this forty-room hotel for more than sixty years and three generations, and the result feels closer to a well-kept family home than a hotel: original period furniture, damask tapestry, and Murano glass chandeliers fill rooms that range from a compact Economy to a Superior with garden views. Staff speak English, Spanish, Italian, and French, book excursions through the hotel's tour desk, and have arranged everything from water taxi transfers to restaurant tables for guests who ask. There's a bar for an evening drink, a small fitness room, a massage service, and a doctor on call. The excursions on offer tend toward the city's quieter corners rather than the standard sightseeing loop. Pets are welcome, and the elevator makes upper floors accessible for guests who need it. The location does real work too: Teatro La Fenice, the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and the Grand Canal are all within walking distance. This suits travelers who want Venice without the theatrics, who would rather have a coffee in the garden than queue for a rooftop bar, and who appreciate hospitality that feels family-run rather than corporate. It will feel underwhelming to anyone chasing a design-hotel statement or a Grand Canal view, since garden is the only view on offer here. What Hotel Flora offers instead is quieter, and for the right guest, harder to find. A family-run hotel in a 17th-century palazzo near St. Mark's Square, built around a walled garden that's rare for Venice. Forty rooms pair period furniture with Murano glass chandeliers, and staff arrange excursions and water taxis. It suits guests who want quiet over spectacle.
