THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Racha Resort
The last boat from Chalong Pier to Racha Yai Island leaves at four in the afternoon, and anyone who misses it has to call ahead and arrange a private crossing, because there is no bridge, no causeway, and no way to simply drive in. The Racha sits on Batok Bay, 85 villas set across 20 acres of low-rise grounds, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and certified by EarthCheck for its environmental practices. Days here run on water: a dive center sends guests out to the Andaman's house reefs, three ozonated pools sit scattered through the property, and the Anumba Spa adds VIP couples' suites, an ocean-facing gym and an OM studio for yoga. The Grand Queen Suite looks straight out to sea; the Junior Suite comes with its own private pool, for people who would rather not share. Sunset Restaurant serves seafood caught that day, Earth Cafe serves an international menu, and Bamboo handles Thai cuisine done properly. None of this suits someone who wants Phuket's restaurants and nightlife within easy reach, or who is arriving late and hoping to talk their way past a locked jetty. What it does have that gated beach resorts on the mainland cannot claim is the island itself, uninterrupted by roads, traffic or anyone who isn't also staying there. Meeting rooms and a boardroom exist for the rare guest who brings work along, but the resort is built for people who came to be somewhere the ferry schedule decides when they leave, not the other way round. Reachable only by boat from Chalong Pier, The Racha spreads 85 villas across a private island in the Andaman Sea, with a dive center, three pools and a spa filling the days. It suits people happy to let a ferry schedule set the pace, not those wanting nightlife nearby.

The Grand Pool Suites at The Racha open onto private infinity-edge swimming pools that appear to merge with the Andaman Sea, complemented by a large sundeck and an open-air pavilion. At ninety-three square metres, these suites rank among the resort's most spacious accommodations, ideal for couples chasing a private, panoramic sea view.
