THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Slate Phuket
The Slate spreads across 25 acres near Nai Yang Beach on Phuket's northern coast, close enough to Sirinat National Park that the drive into Phuket Town runs a good forty minutes. Bill Bensley designed the property in 2007 around the island's tin-mining past, and the theme runs deeper than decor: the restaurant list alone reads like a mining ledger, with Tin Mine, Rivet, Rebar and Tongkah Tin Syndicate sitting alongside a bar, a cafe and a buffet breakfast that stretches to vegan and vegetarian menus. Only 177 rooms are spread over three low-rise floors, so the place never feels stacked the way tower resorts do. Days run toward an outdoor pool and a separate spa tub, a fitness room, tennis and table tennis, and a diving and snorkelling setup for guests who want to be in the water rather than beside it. A kids club, a children's pool, a playroom and babysitting cover younger guests, though the spa itself turns away anyone under four and asks for supervision up to twelve, so parents planning a joint spa afternoon should look elsewhere for that particular day. A doctor is on call, and a sauna and massage rooms sit next to the spa proper. What Bensley's tin-mining thread gives The Slate is a specificity most Phuket resorts skip in favour of generic tropical polish: this is a hotel with a documented, traceable idea running through its restaurants, its courtyards and its name. Anyone wanting to walk into central Phuket Town after dinner will need a car and forty spare minutes. Anyone happy to stay put finds a resort that actually explains itself. Bill Bensley built The Slate in 2007 around Phuket's tin-mining history, down to the restaurant names. Expect a diving club, a kids club, and a spa that keeps under-fours out. It's forty minutes from central Phuket Town, so this suits guests happy to stay put.

At Moo's Kitchen, guests can take a hands-on Thai cooking class, learning to prepare traditional dishes to bring a piece of Phuket home. The class is offered as part of the resort's sublime experiences programme, alongside diving, snorkelling and island tours.
